What the Data Shows
Australia’s total disease burden is divided among six cause-group segments for 2024. Shares use total disability-adjusted life years as the denominator, with five named groups and a residual for all others. Cancer is the largest named group at 16.4%, followed by mental health and substance use disorders at 14.8%. The five named groups account for 64.1% of total burden, while the residual reflects rounding in the published shares.

Data notes & caveats
DALYs combine fatal and non-fatal health loss. The 2024 study is modelled, and the residual inherits rounding from the published shares.
Methodology
The five leading cause-group shares were taken from the AIHW 2024 burden results. The all-other segment is 100% minus the five rounded published shares.
Source consistency notes
Every segment uses one AIHW study, one 2024 total-DALY denominator and one percentage unit.
