What the Data Shows

China’s total employed population is tracked at year-end from 2021 through 2025. The five comparable observations are reported in millions of people from official National Bureau of Statistics communiqués. Employment declined from 746.52 million in 2021 to 725.04 million in 2025. The net fall was 21.48 million people, or 2.9%, and the series briefly rose in 2023 before declining again.

The primary chart does not combine total employment with migrant-worker counts or newly created urban jobs. The official annual figures are preliminary.

Methodology

The primary series uses only the year-end total employed population from each annual communiqué; migrant-worker totals and new urban jobs remain separately labelled support indicators.
