What the Data Shows

Food accounted for 29.3 percent of household consumption expenditure nationwide in China in 2025. The rural Engel coefficient was 31.8 percent, compared with 28.3 percent for urban households. The rural rate exceeded the urban rate by 3.5 percentage points. The national value is a parent benchmark and the three percentages must not be added or treated as population shares.
