What the Data Shows
England and Argentina had played 13 completed senior men’s internationals before their 2026 World Cup semi-final. England won six, Argentina won two and five matches ended level. England therefore hold a four-win advantage across completed matches. A separate 1953 fixture was abandoned at 0–0 and is excluded from the totals.

Data notes & caveats
The record covers completed senior international matches only. Penalty shootouts do not change the standard win-draw-loss result, so the 1998 World Cup match remains a draw here. The abandoned 1953 fixture is listed separately in the historical record and is excluded.
Methodology
The comparison counts completed senior men's internationals from 1951 through 2005. The abandoned match on 17 May 1953 is excluded from the completed-match total. The 1998 World Cup match is treated as a draw after extra time in standard result accounting. The upcoming 2026 semi-final is not included.
Source consistency notes
All results use the same senior men's international match scope and completed-match convention.
