Global Food-System Emissions Mix, 2023

Land-based, energy, industry and waste shares of 17.704 Gt CO₂e in 2023.

What the Data Shows

Global food-system greenhouse-gas emissions are divided among four official compartments in 2023. The shares use a 17.704-gigatonne carbon-dioxide-equivalent total from the same compartment breakdown. Land-based activities account for 64.3%, compared with 21.7% for energy. Industry and waste together account for the remaining 14.0%.

Data notes & caveats

The available 2023 release supports four complete compartments rather than the originally requested seven life-cycle stages. A separate national-total series reports 17.728900 Gt CO₂e, a 0.141% difference, so the shares use only the internally consistent compartment total.

Methodology

EDGAR-FOOD country and international values were summed within each of four official compartments for 2023. Each compartment’s share is its emissions divided by the 17.703833 Gt CO₂e sum of those same compartments.

Source consistency notes

All four segments use the same EDGAR-FOOD release, 2023 period, warming basis and 17.703833 Gt CO₂e denominator.
