What the Data Shows
Goods deficit per resident is measured as the merchandise trade deficit divided by population for selected deficit economies. The data ranks Luxembourg, Malta, Iceland, Hong Kong and Cyprus using World Integrated Trade Solution trade balances and population denominators. Luxembourg leads at about US$15.9k per resident, followed by Malta at US$9.96k and Iceland at US$9.67k. The measure uses goods trade only, with exports on an FOB basis and imports on a CIF basis in the WITS framework.
