What the Data Shows

Goods surplus per resident is measured as the merchandise trade surplus divided by population for selected surplus economies. The data ranks Qatar, Ireland, Norway, Brunei and Switzerland using World Integrated Trade Solution trade balances and population denominators. Qatar leads at about US$20.7k per resident, with Ireland near US$18.1k and Norway near US$11.8k. The measure uses goods trade only, so it does not include services balances.

World Integrated Trade Solution merchandise exports are FOB and imports are CIF. Countries are ranked from World Integrated Trade Solution country snapshots and checked against World Development Indicators population data.

Methodology

Use World Integrated Trade Solution merchandise trade balance in current US dollars divided by World Bank total population. Values are rounded to the nearest US$10 per resident for charting.
