Greenland Ice-Sheet Mass Change, 2002–2022

NASA GRACE/GRACE-FO mass anomaly relative to 16 April 2002; gigatonnes, 2002–2022.

What the Data Shows

Greenland ice-sheet mass variation is tracked from April 2002 to September 2022 using NASA GRACE and GRACE-FO observations. Values are gigatonnes relative to the 16 April 2002 baseline, with point uncertainty reported by NASA. The series moves from 0.00 gigatonnes at the baseline observation to -5,338.20 gigatonnes at the final observation. That endpoint represents a cumulative loss of 5,338.20 gigatonnes, with final-point uncertainty of ±51.63 gigatonnes.

2002.29 0.00
2002.35 68.44
2005.04 -566.27
2010.12 -1,826.80
2017.44 -3,998.51
2018.45 -4,042.00

Dataset/table: Greenland ice-sheet mass variation

Units: gigatonnes relative to 16 April 2002

Evidence: Supports all 213 Greenland mass-anomaly and uncertainty points used in the brief.

Data notes & caveats

Mass anomalies are relative to 16 April 2002, so negative values indicate net ice loss from that baseline. The source has no observations between June 2017 and June 2018 during the transition from GRACE to GRACE-FO.

Methodology

The accompanying data preserves all 213 source observations, while the chart highlights 8 chronological milestone points for legibility. The GRACE-to-GRACE-FO observation gap remains unfilled.

Source consistency notes

All points use one NASA JPL mascon solution, one baseline, one gigatonne unit and one uncertainty convention.
