Highest Electricity Emissions Intensity, 2024

Nations above 1 TWh ranked by lifecycle electricity intensity, gCO₂e/kWh.

What the Data Shows

Electricity emissions intensity is ranked across nations using 2024 Our World in Data and Ember values in grams CO₂e per kilowatt-hour. The chart uses ten power-system rows above a 1 TWh generation floor, with raw intensity as the plotted value and electricity generation used only as scope context. Turkmenistan ranked first at 1,306 gCO₂e per kilowatt-hour. Uzbekistan ranked second at 1,040 gCO₂e per kilowatt-hour, and the leader was 1.82 times South Africa’s tenth-ranked intensity.

Data notes & caveats

The ranking uses 2024 electricity systems with at least 1 TWh of electricity generation. Carbon intensity is the primary plotted metric; total electricity generation is retained only as scope context.

Methodology

Rows are sorted by 2024 carbon_intensity_elec from the OWID energy dataset. Entities with aggregate-region names were excluded, and systems below 1 TWh of 2024 electricity generation were excluded before ranking.

Source consistency notes

All rows use the same OWID energy dataset, same 2024 period and same grams CO₂e per kilowatt-hour unit. The metric is source-attributed because the lifecycle intensity series is processed from Ember and OWID source data.
