Largest Wind and Solar Power Gains, 2015-2024

Nations ranked by 2015-2024 increase in wind-plus-solar generation, TWh.

What the Data Shows

Wind and solar power gains are ranked by nation and nation using same-source 2015 and 2024 electricity-generation endpoints in terawatt-hours. The chart uses ten rows and plots the increase in wind-plus-solar generation, with endpoint values retained as supporting context. China added 1,611 TWh of wind and solar generation between 2015 and 2024. The United States ranked second with a 526 TWh gain, and China’s increase was 32.05 times the United Kingdom’s tenth-ranked gain.

Data notes & caveats

The comparison uses 2015 and 2024 endpoints from the same OWID energy dataset. The 2024 endpoint is used because it is the clean complete-year frame for a broad global comparison.

Methodology

For each nation, 2015 solar electricity and wind electricity were added together, then the same was done for 2024. The plotted value is 2024 wind-plus-solar generation minus 2015 wind-plus-solar generation.

Source consistency notes

All rows use the same OWID energy dataset, same endpoint years and same terawatt-hour unit. The metric is source-attributed because the series is processed from Ember, Energy Institute and OWID source data.
