What the Data Shows
Australian states and territories are ranked by the share of 2025 population change attributable to net overseas and interstate migration. The numerator combines the two net migration components and the denominator is each jurisdiction’s total population change. Tasmania ranks first at 89.8%, followed by South Australia at 85.9%. The Australian Capital Territory ranks lowest at 53.0%, reflecting a larger contribution from natural population increase.

Data notes & caveats
The measure is a contribution ratio rather than a share of one national total. Ratios can exceed 100% or fall below zero when migration and natural change offset each other, although that does not occur in this period.
Methodology
For each jurisdiction, net overseas migration and net interstate migration are added and divided by total population change. The result is multiplied by 100 and ranked from highest to lowest.
Source consistency notes
Every row uses the same ABS population accounting release, year-end period and component definitions.
