Open-weight AI model licence mix, 2024-2025

Ten major open-weight model families by release terms, 2024-2025, share of families.

What the Data Shows

Open-weight AI model licence categories are compared for 10 major model families released in 2024-2025. The composition uses four licence buckets, with each segment counted as a family-level release term within the 10-family scope. Apache 2.0 is the largest bucket at 4 families, while MIT adds 2 more permissive-licence families. Custom, community and noncommercial terms account for the remaining 4 families, so the figures should not be read as a census of all open-weight releases.

Apache 2.0 40
Custom or community licence 30

Data notes & caveats

The denominator is a curated 10-family scope with official model-card or licence evidence. Licence categories are grouped at model-family level and do not count downstream variants, quantizations or derivative releases.

Methodology

Rows were grouped from official model cards and licence pages. Shares use the 10 reviewed families as the denominator and are reported only for that scoped comparison.

Source consistency notes

Rows use 2024-2025 family-level release evidence from official model-card or licence pages. The values are source-labelled because the scope is a curated major-family set rather than an official census.
