U.S. States with the Highest Homeowner Vacancy Rates, 2024

U.S. homes for sale as a share of the homeowner housing inventory; % by state, 2024.

What the Data Shows

Homes vacant for sale within the homeowner housing inventory are compared across the 50 states for 2024. The measure is vacant units for sale only as a share of owner-occupied units plus units for sale only and units sold but not yet occupied and is reported as a percentage. Florida has the highest estimate at 1.7%, 0.1 percentage points above South Dakota. North Dakota ranks ninth at 1.1%, making the leading estimate 1.48 times as high; close estimates should be read with their reported 90% margins of error.

Data notes & caveats

ACS values are survey estimates with 90% margins of error. The ranking contains the 50 states only; District of Columbia is a federal district and Puerto Rico is a territory. The percentage denominator is homeowner housing inventory, not a total formed by adding the ranked percentages.

Methodology

For each state, numerator components B25004:[4] were divided by the homeowner housing inventory denominator B25003:[2];B25004:[4,5] and multiplied by 100. Component margins of error were combined by root-sum-square; percentage margins follow the Census published proportion procedure with the plus-term fallback when required.

Source consistency notes

Every row uses the 2024 ACS 1-year product, the same detailed-table concept, the same state geography class and the same percentage definition.
