Growth in U.S. Net-Metered Battery Capacity, 2016–2024

Annual U.S. net-metered battery capacity across end-use sectors; MW, 2016–2024.

What the Data Shows

U.S. net-metered battery capacity is tracked annually from 2016 through 2024 in megawatts. The nine-point series combines all reported end-use sectors on a consistent EIA basis. Capacity rose from 23.8 MW in 2016 to 2,822.3 MW in 2024, an increase of 2,798.6 MW. The 2024 level was 118.8 times the 2016 level, equivalent to compound annual growth of 81.7%.

Data notes & caveats

The measure covers battery systems reported under net metering and is not the same as all U.S. battery-storage capacity. Capacity is reported in megawatts across the end-use sectors included by the Energy Information Administration.

Methodology

Annual U.S. totals use the battery-capacity series in the Energy Information Administration’s Electric Power Annual 2024. The measure combines all reported end-use sectors under net metering and is expressed in megawatts. Every annual observation from 2016 through 2024 is retained. Growth figures compare the published first and last observations.

Source consistency notes

All values use the same U.S. Energy Information Administration publication, 2016–2024 period and megawatts unit, supporting a like-for-like comparison.
