What the Data Shows
United States net-metered solar photovoltaic customers are tracked annually from 2014 through 2024. The measure counts customer accounts in the EIA Photovoltaic category across all reported end-use sectors; Virtual PV is reported separately. The series increased from 688,742 customers in 2014 to 5,226,624 customers in 2024. The 2024 level was 7.59 times the 2014 level, an increase of 4,537,882 customers.

Data notes & caveats
The EIA total covers the reported residential, commercial, industrial, and transportation end-use fields where available. The Photovoltaic series excludes the separate Virtual PV category reported separately in the same annual release. Customer counts are reported net-metering customer accounts, not a count of unique people.
Methodology
Annual values come from the U.S. EIA Electric Power Annual 2024 and use one consistent technology, sector and unit. The graphic uses eight anchor years for readability, while the page data retains every annual observation from 2014 through 2024. No missing years are interpolated.
Source consistency notes
All 11 observations use the same U.S. EIA annual release, one technology and sector definition, one unit and consecutive annual periods from 2014 through 2024.
