UK New-Car Registrations by Powertrain, 2019–2025

Annual first registrations for five major car powertrains; vehicles, 2019–2025.

What the Data Shows

Five major UK new-car powertrains are tracked annually from 2019 to 2025. Each line uses cars registered for the first time in the calendar year, with petrol and diesel variants combined within the hybrid groups. Battery-electric registrations rise from 38,007 in 2019 to 473,225 in 2025, a 12.5-fold increase. Diesel moves in the opposite direction, falling from 622,089 to 95,838 over the same period.

Publisher: UK Department for Transport and DVLA

Dataset/table: First vehicle registrations by body type, make, model and fuel

Units: vehicle registrations

Date checked: 2026-07-14

Evidence: Supports the five annual car-powertrain series from 2019 through 2025.

Data notes & caveats

Values count first registrations rather than the entire licensed car stock. Smaller residual fuel types are excluded from the five-series comparison but remain in the full annual car total.

Methodology

The model-level data are filtered to cars and summed to calendar-year totals. Fuel records are combined into the same five powertrain definitions for each year before the common-period series are constructed.

Source consistency notes

All five series use one DfT-DVLA source, the same 2019–2025 calendar periods, car universe and registration unit.
