What the Data Shows
China’s national carbon market traded 235 million tonnes of carbon-emission quotas in 2025, up from 189 million tonnes in 2024. The before-and-after comparison uses the same national-market volume definition for both years. Trading volume increased by 46 million tonnes, or 24.3%. Market turnover was 14.63 billion yuan in 2025, but turnover and quota volume are separate metrics.

Data notes & caveats
One quota unit represents one tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent. Trading volume and turnover use different units and are not combined into one series; both annual communiqué figures are preliminary.
Methodology
Compares the two directly published annual quota-volume observations and reports the absolute increase and percentage change between them.
Source consistency notes
Both volume observations use consecutive NBS communiqués, the same national carbon-market definition and the same physical unit.
