Chinese provinces versus national populations, 2024-25

Population benchmark: 2024 Chinese province residents and 2025 national populations, millions.

What the Data Shows

Chinese provinces versus national populations compares large Chinese provincial populations with selected sovereign-state populations. The rows combine 2024 resident population for four Chinese provinces with 2025 UNFPA population values for Ethiopia and Japan, expressed in millions of people. Ethiopia is larger than Guangdong by 7.7 million people, while Guangdong is slightly larger than Japan. The comparison is a mixed-period benchmark because the cleanest province and national population periods differ.

Data notes & caveats

Chinese province rows are 2024 resident population values. National benchmark rows are 2025 UNFPA values, and no shares are shown because no common denominator is used.

Methodology

Rows are ranked by population in millions. Chinese provincial values and national benchmarks are kept in their original latest comparable periods and labelled as a mixed-period benchmark.

Source consistency notes

This is an explicitly mixed-period benchmark: Chinese province values use 2024 resident population, while the national comparison rows use 2025 population values.
