What the Data Shows

Employment in Kenya’s informal sector is tracked annually from 2015 to 2024. The series counts jobs outside small-scale agriculture and pastoralism, and the 2024 observation is provisional. Employment increased from 12.0 million jobs in 2015 to 17.4 million in 2024, a gain of 5.4 million. A decline in 2020 was followed by four consecutive annual increases to the series high in 2024.

Data notes & caveats

The measure excludes small-scale agriculture and pastoralist activities and includes estimated employment components. The 2024 figure is provisional.

Methodology

Kenya National Bureau of Statistics figures reported in thousands of jobs are expressed as job counts.

Source consistency notes

The same exclusion boundary and job-count unit are used across both official survey editions.
